Apropos Cambridge und Mathematik: Einen - oder sogar zwei - meiner Rettungsringe darfst du ruhig mitnehmen, Amy. Ist dir der Regen erspart geblieben, Sachs? Wer sagt denn noch "whamo"? Comment No rain today - actually yesterday already, but that's ok, the caretake decided in spite of sunshine not to start the lawn mower at 7 a. After one day and a half in SF we will go to Tampa by plane. It was all very exciting, but New York and LA, and especially Six Flags and Universal Studios, were so full of people and "action"; it was almost too much. The kids seemed to be happiest today when we went to Santa Monica Beach in the evening Can you imagine that they went swimming for an hour at 7 p. Comment Good morning snails! Thank you for the nice snails palace, atalante! Jennica in Rudolph Delson's book "Maynard and Jennica" the "older" snails surely remember the book, I think quite a few of us read it speaks like that.
I've like totally never heard about this like VALspeak, but it's like really funny Comment Hmm, I just returned from a parallel universe - still confused. The wormhole is in 69, I think. Comment Yes, Emil, the first time I read 69 I was also wondering who is me1 and what in the world is he or she talking about.
LOL But the other snails seem to believe that all this made sense Comment Did you notice that the parallel universe does not only mirror this thread up to 69 but continues to tamper with current postings? Comment me1 is a very old snail but very shy and only ocassionally lurking. Alle starren mich jetzt komisch an!
Comment Well, no duh, I know right?! Oh why, it's like totally cool. That was an answer for Emil LOL. Comment And to make understanding easier for Emil: I just learned that "I know right" is an interrobang.

A reverse and upside down interrobang, suitable for starting phrases in Spanish, Galician and Asturian is called by some a gnaborretni interrobang backwards. Comment Thank you, Carullus! You know the answer What's Asturian? Indeed, "Leo docet et delectat": Comment Thank you for the correction, Amy-MiMi. Aunt Wiki tells me that Asturian is one of the languages spoken in Asturias: Comment Die Frage war rhetorisch, aber danke.
Comment Oh lawd, so many topics in this thread so let me start with- suziQ still cleaning up the basement and the garage. Well, could it be, I say could , that your house only has two rooms, cellar and garage? I think they mean "the city" and not the outskirts and suburban area. A restaurant vacation tour would be fine if you have time amd dough.
There is an excellent "Fish and Chips". So I get a little bucket of that tasty stuff wich I will enjoy in my homeward bound train. The whole delicious procedure takes less than two hours. And when I "schwarzfahre" 6g, it is a real bargain. Parallel universe, isn't that awfull? That means I am expanding twice, o my gawd!! Comment Ich bin schwarz gefahren. Comment Okay Amy, sag mir lieber was "schwarzfahren" in English is. When I take the train without buying a ticket, it's a real bargain.
And it has nothing to do with sheep. Comment Oh well, bluesky, I didn't know that!
I was always wondering what it had to do with sheep! Leo delectat et docet, once again. Comment Sorry, bluesky, Duden etym. I fear it's like so often in etymology: Comment Well, LEOs, best thing you can do: Take you're cards instead for "Schnapsen", so you don't have the problem whether there's somewhere the head of a sheep involved or not ;-. Comment Instead of edit Sachs was too fast! As it's Schoofkopf in my dialect that is normally akin to MHG forms like Schoof-sheep and not like Schaff I am inclining to the sheep root ;-.
Comment "Schnapsen" is just another card game I never heard 'Schnapsen' for the play, only 'Sechsundsechzig'. Comment There are slightly different rules for "Schnapsen" actually seems to come from "playing for Schnaps" and 66, also the number of cards is different: Comment That's what I heard it from.
Comment The word is wide spread in southern Germany. I know it both from Swabia and Bavaria. Comment Scarcely had I learnt to read the numbers till ten when my father taught me 'Baure ussm Land dreibe', a very simple play with 'real' cards, not children cards! Then the next play was 'Sechsundsechzig' where one must know the numbers until about seventy because you have won the game with at least 66 'eyes'.
You have to remember and add your 'eyes' during playing. Then the next game was 66, where one must know the numbers up to about seventy because you win the game with Comment Oder vielleicht manchmal spots , wenn sich auf die Bildchen auf den Karten selbst bezogen wird? Dann Old Maid und gin rummy.
I've never played 'Schafkopf' oder 'Sechsundsechzig' although I've heard about them. Maybe they are more common in the Southern regions? I know the basic rules of 'Skat' and 'Doppelkopf' but I'm not very good at it Comment I love all games, including card games, but I wasn't playing last night - and I wasn't watching the soccer either ;- I had just been for a workout and was copying photos from the camera chip onto the computer. Why I find this thread interesting?
Don't know, there is a greater variety of topics than usual. I loved candice's travel accounts, learned something about VALspeak and enjoyed the recipes Mangetout and sugar-snap peas are great in stir-fries, though.
Comment Wow, you were really busy last night: Doppelkopf was the favorite game but Skat was also quite popular. I agree with penguin that this thread has a greater variety of topics and makes it quite interesting. Nevertheless, I don't think that we have as many "stille Mitleser" is lurker really the right word for this? LOL Could somebody please make sure that there is not too much rain this weekend? I will have some visitors and we plan to go to the Landesgartenschau in Aschersleben.
I am thinking about your corrections and we may need the literate manni for a final answer. Goldammer has edited her posting but I won't change my comment because I have to leave. Amy I have no idea how to explain the difference beetween "machen" and "tun" in such sentences. Schwarzfahren and Schwarzfahrer are a nice German words, aren't they? Amy About fare evading in the GDR: I asked my collegues here and they told me that bus and train tickets indeed were very cheap.
Thus, they always had a ticket and they don't know about people who did it otherwise. From my personal experience I can tell you that the situation was quite different when citizens from the GDR travel to other East European countries. For these journeys, they had to exchange money but there was a cap and the maximum amount per person was not very high. Thus, they were usually struggling and trying to keep their money whenever possible.
When I was in Hungary many years ago and took a bus from the train station to a campground. Before boarding the bus I had bought a multi-trip card with six?? When a ticket inspector entered the bus I was able to "save" a couple of people, all of them from the GDR as it turned out. So, I learned that these tickets were very cheap for me but for the citizens of the GDR they were not, firstly because of the aforementioned cap and secondly because they got a very unfavourable exchange rate.

Comment First of all, thanks, Atalante , for this imperial residence.
I'm still gorging myself on your oh so freely offered pastry and ice cream! Which I shouldn't be doing as I'm supposed to lose weight. And not just a little bit. I'm so glad to hear you're still alive and kicking well, maybe not as hard as before. You really had us worried there for a while. Good to have you back!
Wie wird das Wetter heute in Dorsten?
I practically grew up with canasta. My parents and another couple met once a week for some 'serious' rounds of canasta. And of course every Austrian toddler was sooner or later confronted with schnapsen. On rainy days during elementary school vacation the neighborhood kids and I had some 'heavy duty' card games going. Usually canasta, rummy and schnapsen. It was a fun time. Sunny days found us up in the woods behind the house playing Indians, or having a high time in the lake. What an enviable childhood that was! Makes me want to start anew. Looking forward to hearing her next report.
Harambee , I'd have no problem using 'dorm' for Studentenwohnheim. From my experience they also offer single rooms. I've even missed an entire thread! Just can't keep up with you at the moment. Comment What is your question, Artisan? Normally we would try to avoid the repetition of words like "Brettspiele spielen", wouldn't we? Comment manni , the question was if the sentence could be correctly used that way hyphenated , without confusing anybody. Comment the question was if the sentence could be correctly used that way hyphenated , without confusing anybody.
Yes, artisan, you could probably say that, but "Kartenspiele spielen" and the hyphen would hint to that is not such a beautiful German expression as people would prefer "Karten spielen". Placeholder like here for 'Karten': Just read and could have deleted my But typing was so exhausting and sweatdriving 6g , so I leave it here Comment Hi Artisan , nice to see you!
In the end, we played a whole "round" i. But I learned to play quite well, and it was always a lot of fun. Obviously, it is often a grandparent thing to play cards with their grandchildren. Comment manni, my generous me forgives you and my modest me wants to add that your explanation was anyway a bit more structured: Comment Thank you for your manifold answers, harambee ;-.
Comment Hi all snails around the world! I hope someone still remembers me. I never thought to have to stay away from the CC for so long.
So many things happened in the last weeks - happy and sad ones - and time flew by. Where has summer gone? No, it is still here. No need to get pathetic. I think I missed at least 4 CCs. I will read them later. Games and card games are right up my alley. I've got this expression from LEO dictionary.
I really do like playing all kinds of games. I meet with some friends every now and then for a Spieleabend. It's always a lot of fun. Desperately I am looking for someone to play Canasta with me,but everyone seems to like Rommee more. Comment Hi racing snails! You're far too fast for me right now. I read and read and read and when I finally reach the bottom of the page, it's already time to leave LEO again, so I think I have to rewrite my timetable to find some time to write as well!
Comment Magena Of course I remember you! I hadn't realized how long you were absent. But somehow, I hardly play any more today. Maybe it comes back to me when I have grandchildren one day Is it possible to say it, colloquially, or is it totally unusual?
I didn't find it "nur ernst" when I played it, I always found it very funny when someone forgot to say "mau-mau" because he or she was so excited about being rid of their last card. Maybe that's typical, harsh, mischievous German humor! But, in the case of a cultural stranger playing the game for the very first time, I think I would have agreed to play one or two rounds with open cards for you to learn the idea!
For me, it sounds fine! Comment I agree with harambee, "wenigstens" sounds fine to me. I think Emily's suggestions for Amy-MiMi are better than mine. It's the typical way of teaching a new card game, isn't it? However, with Maumau part of the fun gets lost if you know the hand of the next player.
I never experienced adults playing Maumau in a really serious manner, but with games like Skat and Doppelkopf it can be a problem if some players are taking it very serious and want to discuss almost every move when the game is over while others just want to play the next game. Comment harambee, for me it doesn't sounds a bit "holprig". I don't know why but I wouldn't use it.
But well, since it's one against two I will look for a rubber and erase the sentence. Is rubber ok for an BE writing snail like me or should it better be erasure? Something I always wanted to know.. Oh, I almost forgot: I think I liked UNO best, because it's funny with all those extra cards like changing the order in which the players put down the cards and stuff like this.
However, we hardly played it. The 'family game' was Romme but we did only play it once in a while.
Comment Emily I would not call "gosh" a 'brave Maedchen' word because it's not the teens or twens who use it, but yes, it is a 'brave Maedchen' sort of word Sorry, but I'm feeling a bit confused now. Comment Goldammer, it is only used by Maedchen over 30, so I don't think they are Maedchen anymore Nowadays I'm not really a ethusiastic card player.
I prefer Scrabble, the original game as well as a version played with cards. Comment I add a "n" for "an enthusiastic" to my , and offer a "t" for Lara's "ist" in It probably would be interesting to play some games of Scrabble in each others language, Lara, wouldn't it? Comment Moin, moin snails, you are not the "good old creeping on a slime track snails" you are "superfast turbosnails" you have the tiger in your tank.

So many posts to read on one day. Amy , a ride with the streetcar in Lipzig, from one end to the other has cost 20Pfennig for adults and 10Pfg. Until about there was a conductor in each of the three wagons who sold the tickets, cheating did not really work. Later with the slot machines it was easier to cheat. I started "schwarzfahren" when I was 6 years old.
Well it wasn't really "schwarzfahren" what I did, I worked for my fair. Playing cards, Doppelkopf and Skat, I loved it when I worked on constuction. On rainy days we played the whole working day, only interrupted by breakfeast-and lunchbreak and the new beer delivery. Comment The Edit button already disappeared, it must be Leipzig of course. The same problem for my English, so for fairness we should aternate: One game in English, one in German Somehow I think it must be easier to get more points in German, since you have more possibilities to add only one letter at the end of a word, so one often can count the points of two words by writing a crossing word there.
Comment Here's an "n" for Sachs Comment Hi Goldammer, maybe we can play canasta when we'll meet someday. It must be majorly exciting to meet other Leos. Who among you had the pleasure to meet other Leos? Please tell me about your encounters. Did you guess who was who? Hi Steve53, it was about 15 years ago ,when I was in Leipzig to visit a seminar. My colleagues and me had asked a taxi-driver for a certain building. He explained the way in "his mother tongue" ;-. Some minutes later we asked each other where to go , none of us did understand what he was saying!
Steve, that's really very nice to hear from you again! Abd welcome back Magena! It's a tradition that I play Scrabble with my mother every Christmas and she wins. When I was at school, I tried to play it in English with a friend, which wasn't bad, and then also in Latin The problem was not so much to find words but that the number of each of the letters we had was most appropriate for German and not for other languages.
