It is an irritating book. Written in in Cuba the language is that of the period of Romanticism; it is flowery and its characters are just too entrenched to see their way out of slavery and marriage, even when freedom is handed them. It's not light reading, having been translated from 2 sources.

If you have to read it just dive in and get it over with. One person found this helpful. This book may be the perfect example of 's Cuban literature, but it is incredibly dry and boring.

The who book feels like filler for the last chapter, this could have and should have been a short story that also would have been very boring and predictable. I am a History major reading this for a level history class and i typically enjoy the books that i have to read but that was not the case here. See all 5 reviews.

He also gave reason that she was not feminine enough stating that she was more verbal than should be and was often too aggressive for a woman of the 19th century.

After her relationship with Cepeda ended, she went to Madrid. In Madrid she had a number of tumultuous love affairs, some with prominent writers associated with Spanish Romanticism. Her affairs included several engagements to different men. There she met and had an affair with Gabriel Garcia Tassara.

He was also a poet from Seville. In , she had a daughter out of wedlock with Tassara. Soon after the baby was born, Tassara left her and the baby, refusing to call her his daughter.
