The Kindle formatted book is easy to read, though my edition does not include links in the table of contents, which is rather minor. In my opinion, Erin Lale's "Asatru For Beginners" and Greg Shetler's "Living Asatru" are the two essential introductions to read for those new to, or curious about, Asatru and Heathenry before delving deeper into things like the Sagas and Eddas or, say, Tacitus; showing up to a blot; or signing up on Asatru Lore.
Great for introduction into the northern tradition and those interested in it. Very interesting to read and learn about Asatru.

I enjoyed the author's writing style and I learned a lot. I'd definitely recommend this book. This book is very good for the beginner and I recommend it for all who have taken the northern path. Even those who are Asatru will find this book both insightful and spiritual as it walks the novice through the different aspects of our relationship with the northern Gods.

Do you believe that this item violates a copyright? It's not a bad place to start reading either way. I'd personally say to pay strong attention to We Are Our Deeds and Culture of the Teutons which are both excellent at imparting an understanding of some basic concepts such as Frith, Grith, Honor, Luck, and generally laying the foundations for a heathen worldview.
That said, if you're more interested in the Asatru side of things, you might want to start with something like Our Troth, which will get into practical ceremony and the like very quickly. Perhaps most importantly, anything from runestone. If you're not sure, perhaps read around for awhile, and see what resonates with you; people have their own reasons for going one way or the other.
McNallen is essentially the grandfather of Asatru in North America. It's childish to dismiss him and his organization because you feel they're "racist". There's also something to be said about the relationship between one's heritage and religion. It's a special, unique relationship that should be valued, not ignored or castigated.

The illegitimacy of the organization as a religion is a matter of legal record, as they lost their legal status some time ago. As for the racial orientation, if McNallen and the AFA are what you're looking for, then I've done nothing but steer you in that direction, but you should be well aware that the official stance of THIS subreddit is that you're not welcome here hey, there's another chance to point to the sidebar!
In any case, my references to Asatru related material are purely informational; I'd personally be just as appalled to find myself in either racist or Wiccan circles, as neither of them remotely rings true for me. Otherwise though, I'm fine with people being as folkish and racially pure as they want to be, provided they're not violating anyone elses' rights in the process.
Book – Asatru for Beginners
Starting fights is starting fights, however, and McNallen's association with the groups in Charlottesville on August 12 spoke volumes. Besides, McNallen may have been around earlier than many reconstructionist efforts today, but then, so was the Norroena Society. Do we really want to go there?
Let's let him do his thing, and we'll do ours here, and let nobody be surprised when neither of us offers support for the other.
To some degree it's impossible to practice Heathenry without the insertion of some modern material, since the archaeological and documentary records have left us with so many gaps to fill. That being said, some sources do a much better job of interpolating those gaps than others.

Any literature that puts emphasis on the hammer rite, casting circles, calling of quarters, etc. I consider this pretty shoddy practice, since Heathenry is in theory a reconstructionist religion and Wicca has virtually no historical origin. In the Asatru tradition many rituals are very obviously wicca heavy. There's the obvious example of the hammer rite, but most anything you find in a book like our Troth is almost entirely wicca with a Norse skin on it.
