Otherwise, this book is very spot on advice for professionals who have to face the strangeness of the modern job market.

Shea & Gunther, Your Job Survival Guide: A Manual for Thriving in Change | Pearson

Essentially, the modern job market is in permanent flux, just like whitewater, and ones experience is similar to rafting. Change is the watchword, and though things like good leadership, good skills, good teamwork, and good ethics haven't changed, how they are applied and what they are has. The book packages very practical, common sense advice in a way that is both useful and makes it obvious - as the practical and the sensible are not always obvious.

Several times while reading it, the book hit very relevant, sensible points, but made them obvious in a very helpful way. If anything, the book is a good reminder of things we forget too often about dealing with chaos, and bears multiple rereadings. If there is a flaw beyond occasional metaphor abuse , its that the book actually isn't broad enough in its scope - though aimed at higher-level professionals, managers, and the like, its advice is actually good for anyone who is a professional of some kind.

The book limits itself when it really doesn't need to - this makes the advice still good, but if you lend it to someone you may need to remind them of the focus. In short, I'd say this is one of the better books I've read on Career survival, mostly for its ability to break things down, explain them clearly, and remind you of good common sense things to do. It's one I'll read again to remind me of things. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. Overall feedback from the members was very good.

In this signal book for our time, authors Shea and Gunther could not have chosen a more apt metaphor to promote one's understanding of the relationship between self and career. The concept of a person's kayaking in and around churning rapids closely parallels one's negotiating a turbulent workplace milieu. Their message, informed and insightful, reminds us that it is possible to recover a sense of pleasure in our career, provided we properly modulate our approach to work.

The authors provide practical tools that can guide one to recognize, and react accordingly to, both hazards and opportunities. As Shea and Gunther illustrate, change itself has now emerged as the primary element that should command a career minded person's attention. Armed with this recognition, one may prepare for and embrace change as a positive factor. Remaining alert and nimble is vital if a person is to thrive in the midst of change.

Yet, as the authors note, one must appreciate and then learn to avoid maladaptive behaviors that inhibit this progress. The book really is not about slowing down to smell the roses, but rather about developing a sense of when to push hard, when to disengage, and when to rejoin the challenge or choose new ones. Investing time to regenerate one's batteries, to acquire new tools, or to cultivate important relationships are emphasized as legitimate means to enhance both work effectiveness and enjoyment.

Your Job Survival Guide: A Manual for Thriving in Change had an immediate and profound effect on me. Own your own direction, be nimble and flexible, stay optimistic, invest in what makes you happy, make small mistakes and recover quickly, and be resilient. The list of wisdom goes on and on, and is extremely sound. The central metaphor of the book is the difference between working on an ocean liner Titanic vs.
