An absolutely wonderful writing by the Persian Sufi, whose 14th century ecstatic spiritual writings are as relevant today as they ever were! I highly recommend this book for anyone with any spiritual goals, regardless of which religion they might practice, these words can lift the Soul of anyone above religion. One person found this helpful.

No matter what religion you profess, the word and wisdom from God is the same. Even if you don't profess a God, the philosophy in these pages are right for all who desire to live a good and fruitful life.

There are better Hafiz books out there. I have always enjoyed the writing of Hafiz. The Kindle format is nicely paginated for easy viewing. So many classics are thrown together for e-readers, it was a pleasure to read one that is a bit more professional. I have read quotes from Hafiz in the works of other authors which were intriguing enough to get me to purchase this book. It is a long, exaggerated description of unrequited love. The translation is poorly done. The rhymes are stretched beyond credulity. There are jarring anachronisms.

This was absolutely a waste of time and money. If I could give it zero stars I would. Another work of Hafiz brought to us by Khalid Hameed Shaida that picks from the best of Hafiz whom we all know is so devoted to God that ones sometimes gets the feeling he had a direct line to him God and could access him any time he wanted.

Hafiz is clearly a man who "experienced" God first hand and could only speak of the experience with poetry. A defining feature of Hafez' poetry is its ironic tone and the theme of hypocrisy, widely believed to be a critique of the religious and ruling establishments of the time. Persian satire developed during the 14th century, within the courts of the Mongol Period.

  • In this period, Hafez and other notable early satirists, such as Ubayd Zakani, produced a body of work that has since become a template for the use of satire as a political device. Many of his critiques are believed to be targeted at the rule of Amir Mobarez Al-Din Mohammad, specifically, towards the disintegration of important public and private institutions.

He was a Sufi Muslim. His work, particularly his imaginative references to monasteries, convents, Shahneh, and muhtasib, ignored the religious taboos of his period, and he found humor in some of his society's religious doctrines. Employing humor polemically has since become a common practice in Iranian public discourse and persian satire is now perhaps the de facto language of Iranian social commentary.
