I was scanning a list of non fiction titles and somehow passed my mouse over a box for a free sample of The Scarlet Kimono, and when I saw what it was decided to read the sample and enjoyed it so much I ordered the book and read it in one big gulp. Hannah, the heroine gets most of her important information through eavesdropping or being hidden behind something where she sees something she should not, but apart from that she learns so much about herself and how to reject what she does not want in her life and to find her own joy and bliss within the story it makes it all worthwhile.

Both of the societies pictured - England in the early 's and Japan at the same time really have no opportunities for women who must follow family dictates. The extreme racism of both cultures is also explored.

I almost didn't make it through the first portion of this novel. The research was not put into 17th century England to develop a realistic story line at the beginning. It read more like a regency novel despite being set in the 's. The rest, however, was amazing. Once she stepped onto that ship, I was completely immersed in her experience.

Tons of research was put into the Japanese setting. The characters were engaging and their emotions pulled you into the book without the typical "heaving bosom" type romance. It was a classy and enjoyable read. I may actually read that one again someday. Rarely reading romance novels, this was light reading for me. The author detailed her descriptions of surroundings, places, things, etc. However I was definitely entertained. I have not read any other book by the author, thus don't know if the patterns might be the same in different contexts. This story was very entertaining and fun, which kept me up late a few nights, LOL.
My headline says it all. I'm quite the reader of a different genre. I tried this and thought it tedious a bit at the beginning but it's quite, well, extremely worth it to hear out Hannah's story. A very gratifying read, indeed.

Enjoyable tale, felt more modern that the s in which it was set, would have been moreinteresting if the author detailed the storyline of thewife and sister a bit more and to why hehad to not be confro tational with them etc, but over all a nice read and escape.
